– Social Welfare Social welfare cannot really be bound by a solid definition. It has been used in varying ways by different people, depending on what it is that they want to cover. According to the National Association of Social Workers (NASW), “social welfare generally denotes the full range of organized activities of voluntary and governmental agencies that seek to prevent, alleviate, or contribute to the solution of recognized social problems, or to improve the well-being of individuals, groups, or communities.” At times, social welfare is used to refer to aspects of wellbeing material, like basic access to economic resources….

– … Promotion of the general welfare once was a call for the development of new infrastructure that benefited the nation as a whole: building roads and filling potholes, not a million double-wides brimming with sniveling children and empty beer cans. There was once a time when Americans had to purchase or work for their land; now, the essentials and luxuries people would have spent a lifetime trying to attain are freely given, thus diminishing their true value. There is no sense in trying to work hard and strive for more, when our expectations of life can be met as long as we border inadequacy; the moment one finally rises above their circumstances is the moment we are shoved out of the nest…

– The welfare system in the United States performs a wide variety of functions to assist people who have fallen onto hard times. Welfare programs are an evolution of the British Poor Laws whose roots lie in basic charity and the human ideology that one should aid those less fortunate.
