Self as a Supervisor

– I would like to start this self-evaluation by first giving a simple definition of supervision. I found two definitions that I feel describe supervision in a way that helps me to keep some important goals in mind. First, according to Brashears (1995) supervision is an opportunity for the supervisor to use this unique relationship as a process to enable other social workers to practice to the best of their abilities. The second definition I found was from Tsui (2005). which states that supervision is used to ensure clients receive maximum services, limit inappropriate staff responses to clients, enables workers to deliver more effective care, address concerns, receive feedback, maintain standa…  

Solitude of the Garage

– Solitude of the Garage I walked outside into the cool April morning. The air around me was a slightly stinging cold; nevertheless, I took a big deep breath of the refreshing mountain air. I walked over to my dads red and white 1979 Ford F150 pickup and started it for him. I brought it around to the front of the house, put the transmission in neutral, and set the parking brake. After hopping out of the cab, I met my dad coming out of the house, and went around the front of the truck. I hopped into the passenger seat while my dad got into the drivers seat….

The sad reality about most supervisors nowadays is that they think that because they are above the lower ranking employees that they should not have to do any menial tasks that are below their station in the company and that such jobs should be done by their subordinates. This type of leadership is flawed in that it makes the employees feel less appreciated in what they do and easier to replace….

For the most part people learn by trying different alternatives with varying amounts of achievement. How to Become an Optimal Supervisor

– … I particularly like that these stages are seen as cyclical rather than linear as the supervisee developments new skills or concerns they may go through these stages again. I believe that using a developmental approach that is cyclical would allow supervisors to better assess the supervisee’s skills and determine if their skills are appropriate for their level of training. Using a developmental model is also important because research has found that supervisee’s want different things from supervision based on where they are in their professional development….
