–      Amy Tan’s classic short story, “A Pair of Tickets”, is a coming of age story as the protagonist wakes up to her heritage when she travels to her native land, but it is also a story of internal racial tension. Not in the sense of one class looking down on another but of the internal racial tension that rages on inside Jing-mei as the battle between what she is by birth and what she is by nature tears her apart when she suddenly discovers her long lost sisters just a month after her mother dies….

The wishful Mrs. Sommers surprisingly finds herself with a sum of money unusually large for her circumstances and in her relishing and spending it reveals herself to be truly a woman of good intentions but who is weak for the intensity of the moment. Chopin has developed a character in Mrs. Sommers who plays out the fantasy of all people, rich or poor: to be someone they are not and for a day live someone else’s life…. ;

Pair and Extra-Pair Copulation of Asian Openbill Storks

– Pair and extra-pair copulation of Asian openbill storks: Abstract: The copulatory behaviour of Asian openbill stork was observed in the heronry for two years. Atotal of 282 pair copulation attempts (PCAs) and 41 extra-pair copulation attempts (EPCAs) (14.53% of all copulation attempts) were observed among 30 focal pairs. 85% of PCAs and 50% of EPCAs resulted in cloacal contact. Thirteen males (43%) and 21 (70 %) females were involved in EPCAs. There was a correlation between the time that female spent alone on the nest and the occurrence of EPCAs during the presumed fertile period of the female…. ;

– Amy Tan is a Chinese American writer, whose short stories portray the theme that finding the balance between heritage and culture is not always easy. This is seen through Amy Tan’s own life experience and through a couple of the many short stories she has written, for example, “Two Kinds”, “Rice Husband”, and “A Pair of Tickets”. In the following short stories, the daughter becomes everything the mother wished for, but meanwhile, the daughter becomes more American like and loses her Chinese values…. ;

– A Pair of Tickets This story is about a young Lady that lives in California with her mother and Father. She is however Chinese, and refuses to believe she is. This story is both a mystery and a suspense with in a way a tragically happy ending. By the end of this paper I will show how I come to this conclusion. First I will tell the story in my own words in a shorter version. The lady telling this story is in her thirties. Both her parents are from China, her mother left China in 1944…. ;
